2020 "Mote tai" August 23 (Sun) Race Report

The 23rd "Mote Endurance" was held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule included official practice, registration, and vehicle inspection on Saturday, and qualifying and finals on Sunday. The final race time was shortened from 7 hours to 3 hours. The number of participants was limited to 77 and there were no eliminations in the qualifying round. Despite these limitations, each team came together with their own strategy to win the 3-hour "Mote Endurance" and have fun.

The official qualifying was contested by the combined times of the first and second riders as usual, with #103 NMC × ATJ Racing setting the top time for both riders. They secured pole position for the third consecutive year without any complaints. In second place was #27 Team N-PLAN, followed by #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi store in third, #32 Team SANMEI in fourth, BLUE EYES & LEGEND in fifth, and #65 DanRunbu RT Harajuku real estate agency in sixth.

The weather forecast had a rain mark, but it became cloudy from the morning, and although the intense heat of the previous day was gone, it was a humid and muggy day. After the free practice for riders 3-5 who did not run in the qualifying, the riders' briefing was held on the pit lane, and then the start procession began.

At the grid, we did the final check before the race, took commemorative photos with our friends, and saw the usual scene, but the difference this year was that we were wearing masks.

Divided into two groups, the "Mote Endurance" began with a Le Mans-style start. Taking a good start was the #32 Team SANMEI from the 4th grid. Following closely behind were the #1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing from the 9th grid, #26 HAPPY MONDAY, #27 Team N-PLAN, and #8 Maserati Makuhari & NR & Gumcho. The pole position #103 NMC × ATJ Racing was slightly delayed. Speaking of delays, the #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi store from the 3rd grid stalled their engine and had to start from the back of the first group.

【#103 NMC × ATJ Racing】 started late at the start, but took the lead in the opening lap and led the race. 【#32 Team SANMEI】, 【#27 Team N-PLAN】, and 【#1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing】 followed, forming the top group. The race was going smoothly, but on the 9th lap, the safety car entered to collect the overturned vehicle at Victory Corner. The safety car entered the pit on the 13th lap and the race was restarted. This resulted in the safety car helping 【#12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi Store】, which had started late at the start.

And after one hour, many teams entered the pit. At this point, [#1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing] had overtaken [#32 Team SANMEI] to take the lead, but at the halfway point of 1 hour and 30 minutes, [#12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi Store] was in the lead. In third place was [#56 TEAM LANG with MRSK], and the time loss due to refueling was starting to have a significant impact on the rankings.

When there was only 1 hour left, the teams that only needed to refuel once were dominating the top positions. Among them, #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi Store and #1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing stood out, and these two teams were battling for the top spot. With less than 30 minutes remaining, the gap between the two teams was about 16 seconds. As both teams were maintaining a similar pace, the gap remained constant. In the end, #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi Store pulled away from #1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing and crossed the finish line. #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi Store claimed the "Mote tai" victory for the first time in 6 years.

"I think it was good that all three of us were able to run at a similar pace. I stalled the engine at the start, but thanks to the safety car, I was able to catch up. It was a tough race for the two-cylinder teams because it was a three-hour race, but we may have been able to win because it was three hours. I think the biggest reason for our victory was Sato's hard work," said first rider Nagano.

In the rear, #103 NMC × ATJ Racing caught up at a high pace and passed #32 Team SANMEI to take 4th place with 10 minutes remaining. Additionally, #103 NMC × ATJ Racing marked the best time on the final lap and passed #27 Team N-PLAN to finish in 3rd place. #27 Team N-PLAN finished in a disappointing 4th place, while #32 Team SANMEI took 5th place. In 6th place was NST Ninja's highest ranking #932 APPRISE Akuzawa Automobile Yumomi, followed by #65 DanRunbu RT Omotesando Real Estate Agency in 7th place, NST CBR's highest ranking #61 Nakamura Engine Research Institute in 8th place, and NST R25's highest ranking #87 CLUB Green Bird +P in 9th place. In NST G310R, #57 Santoku RT Fan Factory Risshu @zip and in WS, #69 Riding Sports Fire C were the highest ranking teams.
