2017 Motegi Open 11 Hour Endurance Road Race Day 1 Race Report

The 20th "Mote tai" was held for the first time in history for two days, for a total of 24 and a half hours, with the race being contested for 11 hours. On July 9th (Sun), the 74 teams that advanced to the 11-hour endurance road race after winning the 3-hour qualifying race held earlier, gathered again at Twin Ring Motegi on August 26th (Sat). After the briefing, they first competed in the grid qualifying to determine the starting grid.

Grid qualifying was contested with the combined time of the first and second riders. Each session lasted 20 minutes, with the first rider's session starting first. Shortly after, heavy rain began to fall, but it quickly stopped and the riders went on to attack in dry conditions. Marking the top time of 2 minutes and 14.895 seconds was #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi's Katsuya Nagano. Following this was #090 Teruru MotoUP Racing's Kazuki Tomita with 2 minutes and 16.547 seconds, and #23 TEAM ARA Tiger's Den AFH's Toshiyuki Aragaki.

In the second rider's session, #6 PIPIRA Densetsu A's Shinsuke Kawata set a top time of 2:14.081, breaking the course record. In second place was #090 Teruru MotoUP Racing's Tomohiro Toyoshima with a time of 2:15.684, followed by #1 YSS Racing Bulldockertagoss's Takeshi Fujii with a time of 2:16.426.

In the overall time, [#090 Teruru MotoUP Racing] took the pole position with a time of 4 minutes and 31.755 seconds. In second place was [#12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi] with a time of 4 minutes and 32.868 seconds, followed by [#6 Pyu Pyu Electric A] in third place with a time of 4 minutes and 33.906 seconds.

And 74 bikes lined up on the grid, the 20th "Mote tai" race, which will be fought for 11 hours with a Le Mans-style start where riders run to their bikes, has begun. First, the 37 bikes in Group 1 all aim for the first corner at once. The one who showed a good start was #1 YSS Racing Bulldock Tagos, aiming for their 3rd consecutive 5th victory, with rider Fujii. Behind them is former MotoGP™ rider Toru Ukawa from #11 BLUE EYES & DREAM Kashiwa, who started in 5th place. In 3rd place is #78 D;REX's rider, Hiroshi Toyota, who started in 10th place, but will receive a penalty for jumping the start. Following them are #68 Riding Sports Fire 68 and #23 TEAM ARA Tiger's Den AFH.

Opening lap, #11 BLUE EYES & DREAM Kashiwa's Ukawa takes the lead, followed by #1 YSS Racing Bulldock Tagos's Fujii, but #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi comes from behind with a high pace and rises to the top in the third lap. #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi leads the race, with #11 BLUE EYES & DREAM Kashiwa following closely behind, but gradually falling behind. Behind them, #090 Teruru MotoUP Racing approaches and changes positions. However, #090 Teruru MotoUP Racing crashes in the fifth corner. They quickly restart and pit in, minimizing their loss. When #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi pits, #11 BLUE EYES & DREAM Kashiwa takes the lead again, but the positions change with #12 CLUB1.2FK Kusitani Kawaguchi and #080 Teruru MotoUP Racing. The difference in pit stay time for each class is significant, and NST-CBR emerges at the top. However, when the night race begins, #090 Teruru MotoUP Racing shows an astonishing pace. Former Moto3™ rider Kentaro Fujii lights up the track with a high pace of 2 minutes and 18 seconds per lap. They quickly take the lead and complete 109 laps, receiving the checkered flag. In second place is #080 Teruru MotoUP Racing with 108 laps, and in third place is #22 Satoichi, who also completed 108 laps, followed by NST-CBR in second and third place. From fourth place #11 BLUE EYES & DREAM Kashiwa to ninth place #15 WIN-RF, they all completed 107 laps.

The machine that fought for 4 and a half hours will be stored in pit 40-45 and will be released at 8:15 am on August 27 (Sun) and lined up on the grid. The safety car will start at 8:30 am and aim for the goal at 3 pm.

Teams are already entering the pits and some are refueling, so all eyes will be on the movements after the race restarts. Which strategy will prove to be successful!?
