7-Hour Endurance Race Report

【#3 JOS Takagi WM EG6 Buyback】Wins Dramatic Victory in Last 2 Laps!

2012 "JOY TAI" July 15th (Sun) 7-Hour Endurance Race Report The final race of "JOY TAI" on July 15th (Sun) was held under perfect conditions for an endurance race, with thin clouds covering the sky and the summer sun slightly weakening. 80 entry vehicles lined up on the grid without a single one missing, and the race started right on schedule.

The race will start with a rolling start from a 2-lap formation lap, and from the first lap, #18 Asano Automobile Integra, starting from pole position, and #48 Dijon Endless Wako's DC5, starting from second place, engaged in a fierce battle. #18 Asano Automobile Integra, who held onto the lead in the first lap, controlled the pace and won one of the 15th anniversary prizes for the opening of Twin Ring Motegi on the 15th lap.

The race started moving about 40 minutes after the start. The top car, [#18 Asano Automobile Integra], was the first to enter the pit, followed by the rest of the field. This marks the beginning of a total battle, including pit work, typical of endurance races.

At the 2-hour mark from the start, the top position was held by [#38 SKR Omega WM CRX]. However, the intense battle for positions continued every time there was a pit stop. In addition, there was light rain in some parts of the course, adding to the unpredictable nature of the race. In the midst of all this, [#5 Mizuho Pharmacy ZTO Grandpa ED Kame City], who had briefly held the top position, had to stop their car. As the afternoon approached, the weather improved. The strong sunlight shone on the asphalt, increasing the strain on both the drivers and their cars.

At the 4-hour mark, the #1 WAKO'S.M-one in Class 4 took the lead, engaging in a battle across classes with the #38 SKR Omega WM CRX. After reclaiming the lead, the #38 SKR Omega WM CR-X reached 100 laps, while the #59 KOG Wako's Dunlop City in Class 3, which had completed two refueling stops, took second place. This led to the famous "Rabbit and Turtle Race" of the "Joy Tai", but unfortunately the #1 WAKO'S.M-one stopped at the 5th corner on the 107th lap, resulting in a disappointing retirement.

As the race entered its final stages, the #38 SKR Omega WM CR-X was leading, but they were in a situation where they had to pit once again. All eyes were on the timing of their pit stop, and in the meantime, the #59 KOG Wako's Dunlop City, who was in second place, was being chased by the #3 Kaitori JOS Takagi Shi WM EG6 and the #87 Sunspot Endless Civic from behind. This allowed the top three positions to be taken by Class 6 cars.

Just before the remaining 1 hour, the top [#38 SKR Omega WM CR-X] made its final pit stop. When it returned to the course, it maintained a lead of over 2 minutes against the second place [#3 Kaitori JOS Takagishi WM EG6], and the expectations for CR-X's first "JOY TAI" victory were high. However, immediately after that, [#38 SKR Omega WM CR-X] slowed down at turn 5 and although it avoided retirement, it dropped significantly in position. Taking its place at the top was [#3 Kaitori JOS Takagishi WM EG6]. In second place, [#87 Sunspot Endless Civic] was trailing by about 4 seconds. However, [#87 Sunspot Endless Civic] was unable to increase its pace.

With less than 30 minutes remaining, it seemed like [#3 JOS Takagi WM EG6] would be able to hold on to the lead, but then [#87 Sunspot Endless Civic] began to chase them down. With less than 5 minutes remaining, they finally caught up to [#3 JOS Takagi WM EG6], and then with less than 3 minutes left on the 154th lap, they overtook them on the home straight and took the lead for the first time in the race. In fact, at this time, driver Masahiro Hara, who was driving [#3 JOS Takagi WM EG6], mistook them for a car that was a lap behind.

With less than 3 minutes remaining, there is only one lap left in terms of time, and there is no guarantee of a second lap. In such a desperate situation, [#3 Kaitori JOS Takagishi WM EG6] makes their move. They stick closely behind [#87 Sunspot Endless Civic] and wait for their chance, using a lapped car to make a comeback in the S-curve. They continue to hold off [#87 Sunspot Endless Civic] until the home straight, and cross the control line in first place. At that moment, the checkered flag is waved for [#3 Kaitori JOS Takagishi WM EG6], and their first victory at "Joy Tai" is secured.

Race time 7 hours 28 seconds 349, the time difference with 2nd place was a close victory with a difference of only 3 seconds 313, 【#3 Purchased JOS Takagi WM EG6】 driver Hiroyasu Konuma said, "The opponent #87 has the same engine and we shared information. We knew their time and fuel consumption, but they also knew our strategy. The pit was right next to us and all information was shared, so we gave instructions to increase the pace. The driver understood everything and it was a victory of teamwork."

In addition, third place was taken by [#59 KOG Wako's Dunlop City] from Class 3, and a typical "JOY TAI" lineup was formed on the podium.
