The final day of "JOY TAI" has finally arrived. The Twin Ring Motegi, blessed with clear skies once again, saw temperatures rise but humidity remained low, creating a hot autumn-like atmosphere. The grid walk, public briefing on the course, and oath by the Motegi Angels proceeded smoothly, and we are now ready for the 9th start.
The grid has 84 machines. The top 45 are in the first group, and the rest are in the second group, starting with a rolling start.
The #25 Zero 1000V Spot Turbo Civic, which showed a good start from pole position, entered the first corner in the lead. The #83 Honda NSX from the second grid, the #15 Sims BS Blaze Impreza and the #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Trueno from the third grid, and the #18 Bambino Tsunetoyo Civic continued in the same order as in qualifying. In the following second lap, the #83 Honda NSX, which set the fastest lap of the race at 2 minutes 16 seconds 239, rose to the top. It continued to lead the race, but entered the pit first and dropped positions. The #25 Zero 1000V Spot Turbo Civic also pitted before the one-hour mark, and the true face of the "Joy Tai" that cannot win with speed alone gradually became apparent.
After one hour, the fuel-efficient machines rise to the top. First, #18 Bambino Tsunetoyo Civic continues to lap in the lead, but after 1 hour and 40 minutes, it enters the first gas charge. Here, #25 Zero 1000V Spot Turbo Civic runs at a high pace and takes the lead again, but only for a short time. After 2 hours, #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Trueno is in the lead, followed by #1 Jonaan Safety Equipment Mecca DL EG6 and #74 Honda Cars Narashino Suzuban Civic on the same lap.
As the race progresses, the top position changes during pit stops, but the #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Toreno shows consistent speed and fuel efficiency, pulling away from the rest of the pack. After 4 hours, the #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Toreno is in the lead, followed by the #1 Castle South Safety Equipment Mecca DL EG6 and the #98 Hokai @ Quick Wash Team Civic.
When there is only 1 hour left, many teams finish their final pit work and their rankings begin to be determined. At this point, the team that was fighting in 2nd place, [#5 Pulse Sports Mizuho Pharmacy Grandpa City], also pitted because they still had one final refueling left. [#25 Zero 1000V Spot Turbo Civic], who started in pole position, also climbs up to 3rd place in the remaining 40 minutes, but immediately after that, they drop down in rankings due to their 7th pit stop.
As the remaining 30 minutes ticked down, the #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Toreno took a 3-lap lead and entered cruising mode. The #9 Nikko WM Maeda Shokai EK9 moved up to second place, with the #61 Verity Mecca DL Civic in third. However, just before the checkered flag, the #61 Verity Mecca DL Civic stopped on the home straight. During this time, the #51 Kochira Racing with Mars moved up to third place.
In 2009, without the safety car entering and with stable weather, the #4 Wako's DL Uetake IDI Toreno set a new record of 156 laps and won the "JOY TAI" race, becoming the first non-Honda vehicle to win in the 9th year of the "JOY TAI" event.
"I was able to win because the pace and fuel efficiency were good and the tires did not wear out. In 2009, the team changed and the car also changed, but we were able to finish with a car with more potential than in 2008," said Kazuhiro Tomizawa, who joined as the winning contractor and successfully fulfilled his role. Tomizawa, who won for the fourth time as an individual, following 2008.
2nd place was taken by [#9 Nikko WM Maeda Shokai EK9], who finished 3 laps behind. [#51 Kochira Racing with Mars] managed to move up to 3rd place just before the checkered flag and finished the race.
