The F-2 is a fighter jet that was jointly modified and developed by Japan and the United States, incorporating excellent technologies from both countries, tailored to Japan's operational concepts and geographical characteristics, based on the U.S. F-16. Development began in 1988 as the FS-X, with its first flight in 1995, and the development was completed in 2000. The main modifications from the F-16 include an increase in wing area for improved turning performance, and the incorporation of advanced materials and structures for weight reduction. Additionally, to enhance takeoff performance, the engine was upgraded to a thrust-enhanced type, and the latest radar and advanced electronic equipment were adopted.
