K-TAI, which was held on the first weekend of September in 2014, served as the third of the four major endurance races at Twin Ring Motegi. On September 6th (Sat), a 5-hour endurance race for the Challenge Class was held with 30 cars participating. Although the weather had been feeling like autumn for the past few days, it became hot and humid again as the weekend approached.
The race started at 10:30 as planned with the Japanese flag waved by the Motegi Angels from the rolling lap. The pole position holder, #8 TeamHKR, was the first to dive into the first corner, followed by #4 ddd, #20 SuperChipsDream, and #77 Endo Auto Service No.1 from the third grid. However, it was #20 SuperChipsDream who returned to the top after the opening lap. They pulled away from the rest of the pack and entered the second lap. #4 ddd, aiming for their fourth consecutive award for most laps completed, was chasing behind but couldn't keep up with the pace and was overtaken by #52 BLACKOUT R/T, who had made a comeback from the back of the grid. They then engaged in a battle for third place with #23 A1-RACING and #77 Endo Auto Service No.1.
At the one hour mark, #20 SuperChipsDream was leading with 21 laps, followed by #4 ddd, #23 A1-RACING, #77 Endo Auto Service No.1, and #46 SRKT Challenge ADVAN, all on the same lap. However, at the two hour mark, #23 A1-RACING took the lead with 42 laps. #20 SuperChipsDream remained in second place on the same lap, but there was a 2 lap gap between them and the rest of the field. From this point on, it became a one-on-one battle between #23 A1-RACING and #20 SuperChipsDream for the top spot.
Afterwards, the #20 SuperChipsDream showed its speed and once again took the lead, widening the gap. The #23 A1-RACING desperately tried to catch up, but the gap only continued to grow. The #20 SuperChipsDream made 7 pit stops while the #23 A1-RACING made 6, but the #20 SuperChipsDream executed their strategy perfectly and completed 104 laps, crossing the finish line first to receive the checkered flag.
"Thanks to the best oil, best tires, and best engine, we were able to win the award for most laps completed. We were able to execute our strategy of running away from the start. In the end, the brakes were tough, but the number of pit stops went as planned, and thanks to A driver Utagawa-san, we were able to achieve this result," said #20 SuperChipsDream driver Morimoto in a post-race interview.
[#23 A1-RACING] received the Excellent Lap Award with 103 laps. [#21 We Racing] followed with 100 laps. The top of Class II was [#7 Team ABOUT], who finished in 15th place overall, and the top of Class III was [#125 BLUE EYES K], who finished in 6th place overall.
And the MVP was chosen as [#52 BLACKOUT R/T]. Of course, they also perfectly completed procedures such as entry and vehicle inspection. They were evaluated for their total coordination, including team wear and kart dress-up, and their excellent teamwork as they enjoyed "K-TAI" together. They were awarded both the Jump Up Award and the Double Award, and were seen smiling on the podium.
