Encounter
-
Kinran
Location: Kabutomushi Hill
The orchid blooms a bright golden color from late April to May when the forest is covered in fresh greenery. It can grow up to 70cm tall thanks to its symbiotic relationship with trees such as oak and chestnut, but its numbers have been decreasing nationwide in recent years due to changes in the environment caused by neglect and development of the satoyama (traditional rural landscapes). -
Hosomi Otsune Tonbo
Location: Hatcho Tonbo's Tanada
Thin like a Ito Tonbo, this name comes from the fact that it overwinters as an adult. During the winter, it is brown and looks like a withered branch, patiently waiting for spring. As winter comes to an end, it can be seen flying through the forest on sunny days. When warm spring arrives, it matures and changes to a beautiful and vibrant blue color. -
Owl
Location: Hinoki's Slope
Active at night, preying on small mammals such as mice and moles, as well as frogs and beetles. Spring is the season for raising owl chicks. Every year, 1 to 2 chicks leave the large nest box in the forest. While walking and looking up at the nest box, you may see the face of an owl chick peeking out.
